I have lived on Long Island for many years and finally stopped in to Castello di Borghese. The winery is very nice. Not as opulent as some. But better than some of the shacks (barns) set up as “tasting rooms”.

Evie Kahn greeted us and spent a lot of time with us. My wife was with me and we did a tasting. My wife as a rule will drink only white wines, and detests red wine. We did a tasting and soon realized these wine were among the best we had tasted. We were so impressed we joined the wine club.

To the wines, the 2013 Barrel Fermented Chardonnay is one of the best Chardonnay’s I have tasted. It is very different from the 2012. We took home two bottles. While my wife would stick to the white wine, she now tasted the 2010 Select Merlot. She loved it. It was medium body, and not overly tannic of acidic. We also took home two bottles.

Since being a wine club member allows us free tastings. This is where being a club member had its advantages. You get to taste, side by side and pick up differences. We both tasted the Pinot Noir 2013 Reserve. She loved it. It was light body, and not overly tannic of acidic. Very fruity. I could not believe how wonderful it tasted. We then went up a notch in body to the Cabernet Franc 2013 reserve. It has an interesting spicy smokiness to it. We then tasted the Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 Reserve. Very full bodied and intense. We both loved it. Interesting enough, the board rave about the 2013 Sauvignon Blanc Founders Field Reserve. That was one wine we didn’t purchase. Just means your taste and preference may vary. But, in my opinion, the have some of the Reds and Barrel Fermented Chardonnay I have tasted on Long Island. Worth a visit.

One hint, if you can, avoid weekends when they are crowded. This goes for all Long Island wineries. When they have the time, I enjoy discussing the wines with someone as knowledgeable Evie.

Great people and pretty nice wines. Reserve Cabernet Suavignon was the best.

Very friendly atmosphere and great wines! Tastings are somewhat on the higher end ($10 to $15), but enjoyed everything poured and will return for another visit.
